NCT01394952 ↗

Dulaglutide

What was tested?

Dulaglutide versus placebo in people with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease or risk factors. ↗

Registered primary question: Time to the first cardiovascular death, nonfatal heart attack or nonfatal stroke. ↗

What the reviewed report found

Journal year 2019 · Article summary reviewed 2026-09-15

The primary cardiovascular composite occurred in 12.0% with dulaglutide versus 13.4% with placebo (hazard ratio 0.88; 95% CI 0.79–0.99). Gastrointestinal adverse events were more frequent with dulaglutide.↗

Keep in context: The reported median follow-up was 5.4 years. The composite result does not establish benefit for every component, and all-cause mortality did not differ significantly. ↗↗

REWIND: cardiovascular outcomes

Design in the report
A blinded randomized placebo-controlled trial followed participants for a median of 5.4 years.↗
Participants in the report
The trial enrolled 9,901 adults aged at least 50 with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease or risk factors.↗
Limitations
The composite combines different outcomes and does not imply improvement in every component. All-cause mortality was not significantly different; these results do not establish effects in people without type 2 diabetes.↗
