SCALE: weight management without diabetes

NCT01272219 ↗

Liraglutide

What was tested?

Liraglutide versus placebo alongside lifestyle intervention in adults with overweight or obesity, excluding diabetes. ↗

Registered primary question: Weight change and the proportions losing at least 5% or more than 10% of baseline weight at week 56; the registry also includes a later diabetes-onset endpoint. ↗

What the reviewed report found

Journal year 2015 · Article summary reviewed 2026-08-19

Reported mean weight loss was 8.4 kilograms with liraglutide and 2.8 kilograms with placebo. At least 5% weight loss was reported for 63.2% and 27.1%, respectively, and gastrointestinal events were common.↗

Keep in context: This paper reports the 56-week comparison. The registered 160-week diabetes-onset endpoint belongs to a longer follow-up question and should not be inferred from this report. ↗↗

SCALE weight-management trial

Design in the report
A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial assessed body-weight change over 56 weeks alongside lifestyle counseling.↗
Participants in the report
The trial randomized 3,731 adults without type 2 diabetes who had obesity, or overweight with dyslipidemia or hypertension.↗
Limitations
The sponsor-funded trial combined treatment with lifestyle counseling, excluded type 2 diabetes, and used imputation for the reported mean weight-change analysis.↗
