Ipamorelin: gastrointestinal recovery after surgery

NCT00672074 ↗

Ipamorelin

What was tested?

Intravenous ipamorelin versus placebo after bowel-resection surgery. ↗

Registered primary question: Recovery of gastrointestinal function, assessed daily until hospital discharge. ↗

What the reviewed report found

Journal year 2014 · Article summary reviewed 2026-09-15

Time to a tolerated solid meal was not significantly different between groups. Treatment-emergent adverse events occurred in 87.5% with ipamorelin and 94.8% with placebo.↗

Keep in context: The report describes 117 enrolled and 114 in safety and modified intention-to-treat analyses. The primary efficacy difference was not statistically significant; this route and setting do not establish effects for other proposed uses. ↗↗

Postoperative ileus: a placebo-controlled phase 2 trial

Design in the report
A multicenter blinded randomized placebo-controlled study assessed recovery after bowel resection.↗
Participants in the report
The trial enrolled 117 adults; 114 were included in its safety and modified intent-to-treat populations.↗
Limitations
The study was small and included varied underlying conditions. A nonsignificant result does not prove equivalence, and these postoperative findings do not establish safety for other uses or routes.↗
