Tesamorelin: visceral fat in HIV

NCT00123253 ↗

Tesamorelin

What was tested?

Tesamorelin versus placebo in people with HIV-associated abdominal fat accumulation. ↗

Registered primary question: Visceral adipose tissue; the retrieved primary-outcome field does not specify a time frame. ↗

What the reviewed report found

Journal year 2007 · Article summary reviewed 2026-08-19

Visceral adipose tissue reportedly decreased by 15.2% with tesamorelin and increased by 5.0% with placebo. More participants receiving tesamorelin withdrew because of an adverse event, while the groups did not differ significantly in the reported glycemic measures.↗

Keep in context: The publication reports a 26-week comparison using imaging of abdominal fat. That result is not a cardiovascular-outcome trial or a general-obesity result. ↗↗

Twenty-six-week visceral-fat trial

Design in the report
A randomized, placebo-controlled trial assessed computed-tomography visceral adipose tissue and metabolic measures over 26 weeks.↗
Participants in the report
The trial randomized 412 adults living with HIV who had abdominal fat accumulation during antiretroviral therapy; 86% were men.↗
Limitations
The 26-week trial was limited to adults living with HIV and treatment-associated abdominal fat accumulation and did not establish longer-term clinical outcomes.↗
